A one-hour drive to the north of Amman takes you more than 2000 years back in time. Start off in the North by discovering the ancient Roman city of Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. Jerash was a flourishing city of the Decapolis, a league of ten Roman cities.

On first entering the city you are welcomed by Hadrian’s Arch, erected in 129 to honor the visit of Emperor Hadrian to the city. Enter the site of Jerash through the Southern Gate and then stroll down the Maximus Cardo, a long road connecting the Oval, the ancient city center, to the rest of the city. Traces of horse-drawn chariots can be seen as you walk along this street to go to the North Theater, Temple of Zeus, Byzantine churches, colorful mosaics or the Nymphaeum. Endless remarkable sites adorn the city of Jerash. Visit also the Archaeological Museum and learn more about the fascinating history of Jerash and the Romans and view a collection of jewelry, currencies and theater tickets in baked clay!

Travel 15 km north of Jerash and visit the city of Ajlun, home to the famous Ajlun Castle built in the medieval era of Jordan. The castle is a labyrinth of towers and stairs dominating a beautiful mountaintop overlooking the Jordan Valley. Ajlun Castle served as the base for Saladdin’s army against the invading crusaders in the 12th Century, and it was the only fort unconquered.
