Crossing Lake Tiberias, the River Jordan replenishes numerous orchards and gardens along the Jordan Valley until it feeds into the Dead Sea. The 920 sq km lake-like Dead Sea is 400 meters below sea level, created as a result from a prehistoric earthquake that formed the Great Rift Valley, the most profound terrestrial depression of the planet. The Dead Sea is so called due to the high percentage of salts and minerals in its water, and so it cannot sustain any life forms. Its salinity is four times greater than normal seawater, giving it a unique buoyancy quality that lets you float effortlessly in the sea. The Dead Sea’s water and black mud have healing powers used to cure certain skin diseases.

The Dead Sea is of spiritual significance as it is the place of the biblical cities of Sodom and Gemorrah. It is mainly fed by the holy water of the River Jordan where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in an area called Bethany Beyond the Jordan. Both the Dead Sea and the River Jordan lie in the Jordan Valley, an important place in the history of humanity.
